Time Marches On: Embracing the Flow of Life
I turn 60 this week, so of course my mind is drawn to reflecting the passage of time. This unstoppable force called “time” doesn’t pause, rewind, or fast forward for anyone. No matter how we feel about the present moment—whether we are savoring its sweetness or grappling with its challenges—time moves forward, leaving behind yesterday and carrying us into tomorrow. We cannot fight it — it simply is.
There’s something both beautiful and bittersweet about how time marches on. We look at old photographs, listen to familiar songs, and remember moments that feel like yesterday. Yet, those memories are tucked far away in the past. Time’s steady progress can feel daunting, especially when we long to hold on to certain moments or turn back the clock. I often find myself recalling simpler times, but wonder, were they really that special or have I just romanticized them? The mind has a miraculous way of forgetting the bad and remembering the good. But rather than resisting time’s forward march, what if we embraced it? What if we learned to see its passage not as a loss but as an invitation to grow, reflect, and evolve?
Finding Peace in the Passage of Time
To accept that time marches on is to recognize that change is inevitable. Seasons shift, people grow older, and circumstances evolve. This acceptance doesn’t mean we forget the past or stop cherishing precious memories. Instead, it means allowing ourselves to be fully present in the now while being open to what the future holds.
One way to find peace with the passage of time is through mindfulness. Practicing mindfulness helps us appreciate the moment without clinging to it. We learn to experience life as it is, with all its imperfections and fleeting beauty. The present becomes a bridge between the past and the future, and we learn to walk that bridge with grace.
Take a moment to think about your journey so far. Who were you five years ago? How have you changed, grown, and adapted to life’s twists and turns? What would your 13 year old self think about the person you have become? Even at that tender age, I knew I was not destined for a traditional life of family and children, but I could not have foreseen all the amazing adventures I would have or the woman I would become.
Living in Harmony with Time
Rather than fighting against the inevitable flow, we can choose to harmonize with it. Set goals, yes, but also give yourself the grace to adapt when things don’t go as planned. Time will continue to march on, but we can choose how to walk alongside it. Instead of fearing its pace, let’s celebrate it. After all, time’s movement is not just a reminder of change—it’s also a testament to our resilience, our ability to adapt, and our endless capacity for new beginnings, and in my case, a whole new decade!
