Intuition or Anxiety? How to Tell the Difference (and Trust Yourself Again)

As a psychic medium and spiritual teacher, one of the most common questions I hear from students is: “How do I know if this feeling is my intuition, or just my fear talking?” When we learn to distinguish between the two, we stop spinning in doubt and start trusting ourselves more deeply.

The truth is, both intuition and anxiety live in the body, but they speak very differently.

Intuition feels calm and clear

When intuition shows up, it often arrives as a gentle knowing, a soft whisper, or a sense of inner peace, even if the message itself is inconvenient or surprising. Intuition does not shout or  pressure, it simply is. There is usually no frantic story around it, just a quiet clarity that feels grounded and steady.

Anxiety feels urgent and loud

Anxiety, on the other hand, comes with a rush of thoughts, racing heart, tension in the chest or gut, and a sense that you must act right now. Anxiety feeds on “what if” spirals and worst-case scenarios. If there is a long story connected to it, it’s fear! It can feel overwhelming, messy, and full of fear-based chatter.

How to tell the difference in the moment

  • Check your body. Intuition lands softly and doesn’t spike your nervous system. Anxiety often feels jittery, tight, or panicky.
  • Notice the tone. Intuition is neutral or compassionate. Anxiety is judgmental, critical, or dramatic.
  • Look for repetition. Intuition repeats itself quietly and consistently over time. Anxiety is chaotic and constantly changing.

Building trust in yourself

Like any skill, discerning intuition from fear takes practice. Start small by tuning into your body when you make simple decisions, like what to eat or which route to take home. Notice how calm clarity feels versus anxious urgency. The more you practice, the more you will begin to trust your inner wisdom.

When we confuse fear for intuition, we hold ourselves back. We stay stuck in old patterns, avoid opportunities, or sabotage what we truly desire. However, when we learn to recognize our intuition, we unlock guidance that always points us toward growth, healing, and alignment with our higher self.

You already have this wisdom inside of you and both your higher self and soul wants to guide you, but the key is slowing down enough to listen.

Try This: A 3-Step Intuition vs. Anxiety Check-In

Next time you’re unsure, pause and ask yourself:

  1. Breathe and Scan Your Body:  Take three deep breaths. Notice if your body feels tense, jittery, or heavy (anxiety) or calm and grounded (intuition).
  2. Listen to the Tone: Does the message feel like a neutral nudge (intuition) or a frantic push filled with “what ifs” (anxiety)?
  3. Wait and See if it Repeats:  Intuition will gently return with the same message again and again, whereas anxiety will shift, jump, and spiral.

The more you practice this check-in, the easier it becomes to trust your inner guidance and to live with more clarity, peace, and confidence.
