A Love Letter to My Dog and Companion
There is no easy way to write this, but my heart says it is time to share. Two weeks ago I said goodbye to my beloved dog Becky. She crossed over gently, surrounded by my love after years of being a constant companion, emotional anchor, and in many ways, my dearest friend.
If you ever met Becky, you know she was more than just my pet. She was a soulful sassy gal in a small spunky body who seemed to have opinions about everything. (I don’t know who she could have gotten THAT from!) Clients who visited always saw her seated next to me, right on my hip because she refused to be anywhere else, and if I was working, so was she! Becky had that rare ability to hold space quietly (and sometimes NOT so quietly), without judgment and with unconditional love. Isn’t that what we all long for?
As a psychic medium and spiritual teacher, I often talk about energy, presence, and soul connections. Becky embodied all of that. She could be loud and demanding, but her 9 pounds offered a strong presence of power which was grounding and true. She was the smallest in my “pack,” but every ounce the alpha, and for the three who remain, her loss is tangible. In my most challenging seasons, she sat beside me, offering nothing but her steady breath and warm body, and thankfully, somehow, that was enough.
The grief I am feeling now is deep. It is not just the loss of routine or her little paws echoing through the hallway, or how she jumped on the back of my legs trying to get me to feed her faster, but it is the missing piece of my heart that she took with her. Yet even in this sadness, I feel her around me. I hear her in the quiet moments. I sense her watching over me during readings and even see her out of the corner of my eye as I enter a room. I believe with all my heart that love like hers never leaves, it only changes form.
Becky reminded me every day to slow down and observe. To enjoy the sun on my face. To stop working long enough to cuddle on the couch and embrace a good ear rub. She was the nudge to get outside, to move my body, to live in the moment. I believe she’s still doing that, just from the other side now.
If you have ever loved and lost an animal companion, I know you understand.
So today I honor Becky with tears, gratitude and hope. She came into my life when I needed her most, and now she is on her next journey…free, joyful, and probably barking at someone in the spirit world. I cannot wait to see her again.
Thank you Becky for everything; I will carry your love with me always.
If you feel moved to share your own story of animal love and loss, I welcome it. Sometimes healing happens simply by knowing we are not alone in our grief.
With love and paws in my heart,
Susan 🌈
Beautiful words and vivid memories 🐾 Becky was truly one of one and adored her Mumma. Till you meet again she will be walking right beside you.
What a beautiful tribute Susan.. You are both so lucky to have each other, even as the forms change. Grief is an honor. I still think of Catherine ( who Becky reminded me of a bit) every day . My heart is with you. 🩷
This is so touching, Susan. As you know, I lost my cat earlier this year, and soon after, I felt his presence with me—letting me know he’s still near. These beloved companions truly are our little soul mates, here to support us through this journey. 💛 Sending love as you grieve, and thank you for sharing this.
